GETTING TO MAYRHOFEN
Mayrhofen sits at the end of the Zillertal valley in Tyrol, Austria. It is well connected by road and rail, with Innsbruck, Salzburg and Munich providing the main airport options.
FLYING TO MAYRHOFEN
There are three practical airport options for travelling from the UK.
INNSBRUCK
The closest airport to Mayrhofen (50km). Innsbruck is usually the most straightforward option if flight times and prices work for you. From Innsbruck Airport, you can travel by public transport via Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof, then Jenbach and the Zillertalbahn to Mayrhofen. Private transfer services are also available. Board bags are typically left outside the airport.
SALZBURG
Approximately 150 km from Mayrhofen. Salzburg can sometimes offer better flight availability or prices from the UK. From Salzburg, you can continue by train towards Jenbach and then take the Zillertalbahn to Mayrhofen. Board bags are typically left outside the airport.
MUNICH
Approximately 170 km from Mayrhofen. Munich offers a much wider range of international flights and can be a useful alternative if the flight times or prices make it worthwhile. The journey to Mayrhofen is longer, so check your arrival time carefully if you are planning to use public transport.
---------------------------------------------------------
FROM INNSBRUCK AIRPORT TO MAYRHOFEN
If you're flying into Innsbruck, the easiest public transport route is:
Innsbruck Airport → Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof → Jenbach → Mayrhofen
1. Innsbruck Airport → Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof
Bus F runs from directly outside the airport terminal to Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof (main railway station).
The journey takes around 15–20 minutes.
Look for the bus stop outside the terminal and check the current departure times before travelling. You can buy a ticket at the airport (outside) or use the OBB App.
2. Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof → Jenbach
At Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof, take a train towards Jenbach.
When booking your journey through ÖBB, you can enter:
From: Innsbruck Flughafen
To: Mayrhofen im Zillertal Bahnhof
This will allow the journey planner to show the complete route.
ÖBB: https://www.oebb.at/en/
3. Jenbach → Mayrhofen
Jenbach is where you change from the main railway network onto the Zillertalbahn.
Follow the signs for the Zillertalbahn and take the train towards Mayrhofen.
Mayrhofen is the end of the line, so you don't need to worry about getting off at the wrong station.
The journey from Jenbach to Mayrhofen takes approximately 50–60 minutes, depending on the service. The Zillertalbahn normally operates frequently, with additional bus services also connecting Jenbach and Mayrhofen.
IMPORTANT IF YOU ARRIVE LATE
Don't assume you can arrive at any time and simply jump on the next train.
Connections into the Zillertal become less frequent later in the evening, so check the complete journey from the airport before booking your flight.
This is particularly important if you're travelling from the UK and arriving in Innsbruck later in the afternoon or evening.
If your flight is delayed, check the current ÖBB connection information rather than relying on the timetable you looked at when booking.
There are also private transfer and shuttle options from Innsbruck Airport if public transport doesn't work with your flight time. Mayrhofen's official travel information lists shuttle services as an alternative.
FROM SALZBURG AIRPORT TO MAYRHOFEN
The public transport route is:
Salzburg Airport → Salzburg Hauptbahnhof → Jenbach → Mayrhofen
1. Salzburg Airport → Salzburg Hauptbahnhof
The airport is connected to Salzburg Hauptbahnhof by public bus.
Follow the signs from the arrivals area for the airport bus.
Allow approximately 20 minutes for the journey, depending on traffic.
Check the current airport bus timetable before travelling.
2. Salzburg Hauptbahnhof → Jenbach
From Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, take a train towards Jenbach.
Some services may require a change, so use the ÖBB journey planner to find the best connection for your arrival time.
3. Jenbach → Mayrhofen
At Jenbach, change to the Zillertalbahn for Mayrhofen.
The journey to Mayrhofen is approximately 50–60 minutes.
Again, Mayrhofen is the end of the line.
Tip: If you're travelling with a snowboard bag, allow a little extra time for changes between trains and stations. You don't want to be sprinting across a station with a board bag because you've booked a two-minute connection.
FROM MUNICH AIRPORT TO MAYRHOFEN
Munich is further away but can be a useful option because it has a much larger choice of UK flights.
There are two basic approaches:
Munich Airport → Munich → Jenbach → Mayrhofen
or a pre-booked transfer directly from Munich Airport to Mayrhofen.
BY TRAIN
Munich Airport has its own railway station.
You can take the S-Bahn into Munich Hauptbahnhof and then continue by train towards Jenbach. From Jenbach, change onto the Zillertalbahn for Mayrhofen.
The journey is considerably longer than travelling via Innsbruck, so check the complete journey before booking your flight, particularly if you are arriving later in the day. It is highly recommended you reserve a seat on the train to avoid having to stand. You can see if the seat is reserved on a electronic screen above each seat. It states the reservation 'from' and 'to' stations.
BY CAR
FROM THE UK
For most people driving from the UK, the Channel Tunnel is the most straightforward starting point. From Calais, the drive to Mayrhofen is roughly 11 hours of driving, depending on traffic and route. That's a long way in one hit, particularly in winter.
For this reason, an overnight stop in Germany can make the journey considerably more manageable.
AUSTRIAN MOTORWAYS
The main route into the Zillertal is:
A12 → Zillertal exit → B169 → Mayrhofen
VIGNETTE
Austria uses a motorway vignette system on many motorways and expressways. These can be ordered via an APP or a service stations near Austria.
WINTER TYRES & SNOW CHAINS
Winter driving in Austria needs some preparation.
Between 1 November and 15 April, winter tyres are required in wintry road conditions.
Snow chains may also be required when indicated by road signs. If you're driving into the Alps in winter, I'd recommend carrying snow chains even if you don't expect to need them. Conditions can change quickly once you're climbing into the valley.
